June 12 Informational Event and Gluten Free Food Preparation Demonstration to be Hosted by St. Anthony Community Hospital

WARWICK (May 30) – There are currently no medications that cure or control Celiac Disease, an auto immune digestive disorder that damages the villi of the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. The only control is to remain on a strict gluten free diet.

On Wednesday evening, June 12, St. Anthony Community Hospital will host a free informational event and gluten free food preparation demonstration beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Greenbriar Room at Mount Alverno Center, 20 Grand St., Warwick, just ¼ mile past the hospital.

Lead dietitian Janine Killeen RD,CDE,CDN a Morrison Management Specialist from St. Anthony Community Hospital, will offer a presentation on Celiac Disease. Special guest Carmela Decker, a Culinary Institute of America graduate and owner of Sense Gluten; a gluten free baked confections and homemade foods company, will present a cooking demonstration and all guests will be invited to sample her gluten free dishes.

“Food tasting will be a wonderful part of this event,” said Killeen. “Self-management in Celiac disease is a way of making decisions to fill your prescription for a new healthy lifestyle. Educating yourself on a gluten free lifestyle is an important and essential first step. And even individuals who have not been diagnosed with Celiac Disease may find removing some or most gluten from their diets healing since they may have a wheat or gluten intolerance or sensitivity.”

Anyone planning to attend the June 12 event must register by calling 845-987-5197.

Informational events and healthy cooking demonstrations are periodically offered as a community service for the general public at St. Anthony Community Hospital.
