Enthusiastic audience attends free “Holiday Apps” informational event & cooking demonstration hosted by St. Anthony Community Hospital

WARWICK (Oct. 23) – A round of applause at the conclusion of a free informational event, “Holiday Apps,” was a good indication that the event was a success.

“This was really very informative,” said Warwick resident Anita Colman’” I would go again and I would tell all my friends to attend.”

On Tuesday evening, October 16, St. Anthony Community Hospital hosted another in a series of informational events and cooking demonstrations in the Greenbriar Room at Mount Alverno Center in Warwick, NY.

Representatives of Morrison Food Service Management including Lead Dietitian Janine Killeen and Carmela Decker, assistant director and chef, were on hand to explain and demonstrate that you can continue to eat healthy throughout out the upcoming holiday season.

Kileen and her staff gave an entertaining and informative power point presentation using visual aids to stress the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits especially during the holiday season. She explained that many of us are likely to gain about five pounds during the holiday season and not loose it afterwards. The additional problem these days, she added, is that people are retaining this weight due to our ever-increasing sedentary lifestyles.

All of the speakers warned that appetizers at holiday parties are often high in calories and that party goers should eat something healthy like an apple or a pear before leaving home so they don’t arrive at the celebration famished.

Decker, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, prepared, demonstrated and served a hearty Kabocha Bisque, Korean Chap Chae and gluten free shrimp toast along with a colorful salad using farm fresh seasonal fruits and cheeses and home made Bruchetta.

Everyone who attended also received a copy of helpful nutrition, exercise and weight loss tips.

Informational events and healthy cooking demonstrations are periodically offered as a community service for the general public at St. Anthony Community Hospital. For information call 845-987-5197.
