Schervier Pavilion Earns Five Star Quality Rating
Prestigious Rating Awarded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
WARWICK (July 9, 2010) – Schervier Pavilion, a 120-bed skilled nursing facility on the Warwick Campus of the Bon Secours Charity Health System, was recently awarded a 5-Star Quality Rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The 5-star overall quality rating is the highest that can be awarded to a nursing home and only 10 per cent of all nursing homes qualify.
The prestigious award is based on the ratings given to a facility for health inspections, quality measures and staffing.
The basis for the health inspection rating is an analysis of the last three years of onsite inspections, including both annual visits and any complaint investigation findings. Inspectors visit each nursing home and collect specific information to determine whether a nursing home meets Medicare's requirements for safety and quality of care.
The quality measures rating is based on ten different physical and clinical barometers for nursing home residents, such as the percent of residents with pressure ulcers, the percent of residents with moderate to severe pain, or the percent of residents who have changes in their ability to move about. This information is collected by the nursing home on all residents and shows how well nursing homes care for their residents' physical and clinical needs.
The staffing rating includes information about the average number of hours of care given by nursing staff to each resident each day. This rating considers differences in the level of care that residents in different nursing homes need. For example, a nursing home that has residents with above average health problems would be expected to have more nursing staff than a nursing home where the needs are not as high.
In addition to the CMS evaluation, a recent successful survey of the facility, conducted by the New York State Department of Health, was also a contributing factor to the 5-Star Quality Rating.
On Thursday, July 8, Schervier Pavilion’s administration sponsored a luncheon and celebration held in the outdoor pavilion on the grounds of the facility to thank all the members of the staff for their contribution in earning this rating.
“Receiving this award had to be the result of a team effort throughout all of our departments,” said Toni Clark, senior vice president of Senior Services. “It’s an honor to work with everyone on our staff.”
Since staff members break for lunch at different times, food and refreshments were served by administration and department heads over a two-hour period. Clark and Schervier Pavilion Administrator Michael Deyo personally greeted and thanked all staff members as they arrived.
“It is my sincere belief that we would not have earned this 5-Star Quality Rating without the dedication and devotion shown to our residents, every day, by our staff,” said Deyo. “We are all proud of them and the work they do. And our residents and their families are extremely grateful.”
Schervier Pavilion is licensed by the New York State Department of Health and accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation. Dedicated to the highest standard of health care excellence, its full range of services, such as its therapeutic recreational program, are designed to respond to each individual’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
In addition to quality long term care services, Schervier Pavilion also offers a wide range of short-term (sub acute) care needs. Its sub acute services include IV therapy, Rehabilitation therapy and wound care. These services afford residents the ability to recuperate for a short time in the sub-acute unit of the facility and then return to the community where they can resume a more independent life. In some cases, they can then enter Schervier Pavilion’s Day-At-A-Time, an innovative medical adult day care program that provides nursing services, medication administration, ongoing evaluations, and stimulating activities tailored to each individual’s needs and abilities.
