Bill Dale: Accurate Imaging Technology, Skilled Workforce Help Former Rehabilitation Director Tackle Knee Pain

Bill Dale, patient at St. Anthony Community Hospital's Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging Department.

For almost 40 years, Bill Dale has lived in Warwick, NY.

He knows his neighbors. He knows the community. And, he knows where to go for quality care close to home: St. Anthony Community Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth).

Customized Care

In July, Bill began experiencing knee pain that made it uncomfortable for him to walk. He scheduled an appointment with his primary care physician who determined an x-ray was  needed to make a diagnosis.

Fortunately, Bill didn’t have to go far for the test. The nearest location was just across the street from his primary care physician’s office at the Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging Department in St. Anthony Community Hospital.

"I’ve had many imaging tests done there over the past few decades and they’ve all been good experiences,” said Bill. “As a former Director of Rehabilitation for a human services organization, I understand how important it is to customize care—on every level—and the staff here is just extraordinary."

Precision Imaging

After review of the x-ray results, it was determined more information was needed about Bill’s knee and a computed tomography (CT) scan was scheduled. This diagnostic tool combines x-rays with advanced computer processing technology to create precise digital images of structures or organs inside the body. Doctors then use the enhanced imagery to rule out or confirm the presence of certain abnormalities or diseases.

Feels Like Family

Bill returned to St. Anthony Community Hospital for the CT scan. His new test was scheduled in the recently renovated Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging Department.

After completing the registration process, Bill was greeted in the waiting room by a supervisor for further processing and to answer any questions. He was then personally escorted to the CT scan room for the test by Christine Wanczyk and met by Liang Ouyang, both certified Radiologic Technologists.

"They meticulously walked me through the entire process and told me what to expect, how long it would be and even the sounds the CT machine makes,” said Bill. “The fact that they didn’t rush me, went the extra mile and made me feel like family, that was everything to me.”

No Questions Unanswered

When the CT scan was finished, Christine continued answering additional questions from Bill. She even walked him to the hospital’s exit. It’s something he’s done many times before, but nevertheless, Bill was appreciative of the personalized attention.

“Their ability to interact with technology on such a high level, while also offering compassionate care, has been exceptional. I want to acknowledge them all for a job well done,” he said.

This is positive feedback that Andrew Roberts, Director of Radiology for St. Anthony Community Hospital and Bon Secours Community Hospital, both WMCHealth members, is happy to hear and often sees on a daily basis.

“Our workforce is extremely dedicated and understands the needs of our community,” he said. "They are absolute professionals who provide exceptional patient care and accurate imaging technology."

New Year, New Hope

When the CT scan results came back, they indicated Bill’s knee pain was the result of arthritis, or inflammation of the joint, coupled with prior injuries. With this new information, Bill made an  appointment with his orthopedic surgeon John Juliano, MD, Chief of Surgery, The Total Joint Replacement Center at St. Anthony Community Hospital, for the start of the new year. He is optimistic about getting back to a functional life through non-surgical pain relief options.

"Having this continuity of care in the community has been so helpful," Bill said. “If you want convenience, great service and professional care—St. Anthony is the place to be."
