Coronavirus (COVID-19): Maintaining a Safe and Effective Care Environment

A safe and effective care environment is our highest priority, and Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) hospitals and medical practices have undertaken necessary steps to protect our patients and workforce as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation evolves.

On this site, you will find the most up-to-date information on our patient and visitor guidelines, as well as details about testing that is being conducted on some of our hospital campuses, by appointment only. In addition, information is available on how to donate supplies or make a contribution to our health network.

The COVID-19 anxiety and research hotline is staffed by trained medical personnel that are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide free confidential telephone counseling services for members of the community and staff experiencing anxiety and depression as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Visitation

Good Samaritan Hospital, adult patients are limited to one designated support person, and two hours of visitation between 2 to 6 p.m. Exceptions include:

  • Labor and Delivery is permitted two birth partners 24/7.
  • Mother/Baby is permitted two support persons, one of which may stay 24/7 and the other support person may visit from the hours of 12-6.
  • End-of-life and extenuating circumstances, as well as patients travelling from outside New York for care that cannot be delayed.
  • Behavioral Health units have visitation guidelines which are provided to patients and families upon admission.

Additionally:

  • All visitors, including designated support people, must be screened for symptoms and recent travel. Any visitor subject to quarantine restrictions for exposure or recent travel domestically or abroad, will not be allowed visitation. This includes quarantine orders specific to New York State available at https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/covid-19-travel- advisory.
  • Adult patients can designate one support person for visitation up to two consecutive hours per patient per day for COVID patients and four hours per day for non-COVID patients between the hours of 2 and 6 p.m.
  • One support person will be able to accompany patients during emergency room care, and during intake and discharge for ambulatory surgeries and procedures.
  • Visitors should remain in patient rooms at all times and exit the campus when their visitation time or accompaniment is over.
  • All hospital, state and federal guidelines regarding infection control practices must be followed.

For patients using personal devices for communication with family and friends:  All WMCHealth policies must be adhered to regarding patient photography and recording/videotaping.  Any live video streaming between patients and family/friends must be done with the patients and WMCHealth approval, be time limited, should not include clinical procedures or staff and should not interfere with WMCHealth clinical treatment or operations.

Thermal Scanning

We are now using thermal scanning to check all approved visitors for fever.  To protect the health and safety of our patients and our workforce, you must also protect your own health to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). 

  • WMCHealth protocols during this time require that all visitors are fever-free for at least 72 hours before entering the hospital.

While a fever is a symptom of COVID-19 – it can also be a symptom of many other illnesses. If you are concerned about your fever, please reach out directly to your primary care physician. We will continue to scan any approved visitors for fever. Once you are fever free for 72 hours and without symptoms of illness, you can return for screening, and then visitation after screening.

While visitor restrictions are in place there are other methods to facilitate communication: 

  • Phone
  • Facetime 
  • We are happy to work with your loved one on this to provide other options 

Temporary Changes in Outpatient Services

To help prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) is making several temporary changes to our ambulatory and outpatient services to ensure that we are able to care for our patients in a safe and effective care environment in our hospitals and medical practices.

WMCHealth offers COVID-19 diagnostic testing at Good Samaritan Hospital

Testing is available by appointment only.

How do I make an appointment? 

  • Testing is available for current and former patients whose physicians are affiliated with Bon Secours Medical Group, Good Samaritan Hospital, St. Anthony Community Hospital and Bon Secours Community Hospital
  • Please call your primary care provider for a referral 
    • You will receive a screening, and if appropriate, you’ll be given an appointment.
  • Testing will be held on an intermittent schedule
  • Current and former patients whose physicians are affiliated with Bon Secours Medical Group, Good Samaritan Hospital, St. Anthony Community Hospital and Bon Secours Community Hospital can book a COVID-19 testing appointment using this MyChart link

What should I bring?

  • When you come to your appointment, you will need to bring your photo identification and insurance card, if applicable.

When will I receive my results? 

  • At this time, diagnostic results can take up to five days and antibody results can take up to three days.

The self-pay cost for an individual seeking a COVID-19 diagnostic test is $75
